Al-Taj News – His Majesty King Abdullah II on Monday chaired a meeting to review the government’s efforts and plans in the areas of green finance and climate finance, and directed the government to develop an integrated and unified national strategy for climate finance, in cooperation and coordination with the private sector.
In the presence of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, His Majesty stressed the importance of providing technical support programs to enable the public and private sectors to benefit from available climate finance sources and carbon emissions reduction tools, in order to achieve best environmental practices in line with local and global environmental and climate targets.
His Majesty the King pointed to the importance of climate finance in strengthening efforts aimed at achieving environmental goals and sustainable development.
His Majesty listened to a briefing by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan on the progress made in the field of climate finance, particularly Jordan’s securing of $295 million in financing from the Green Climate Fund for the National Water Carrier Project, the largest financing provided by the Fund for a single project, in addition to the Kingdom being selected as the headquarters for the Fund’s representative office for the Middle East, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe.
Green finance aims to direct resources toward economic activities that contribute to environmental preservation and pollution reduction, while climate finance focuses on addressing climate change, reducing emissions, and adapting to its impacts, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, Director of the King’s Office Alaa Al-Batayneh, and Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman.
